My Black History Moment

Hi Chocolate Wonder!

I had to take one of my twin daughters to urgent care and where one goes the other follows. That's how we ended up with both of them with us in the waiting room at 9am in the morning. The youngest twin who is both impulsive and hyperactive, not to mention super smart, decided it was the perfect time to ask me in the middle of a waiting room filled with people the following question,

"Mommy when do they teach white history???!!!"

In an instant I heard the record stop and every neck turn toward me and my daughter. I quickly said to her with no emotion in my voice,

"They teach white history every single day they teach history at school"

I chose not to be politically correct. I also chose not to read the room after made my statement. However I will tell you this, it all of a sudden felt very cold!!

😁😁❄️❄️❄️

I didn’t care. What I said was true and my daughter was satisfied and I was pleased that. I told her the flat out truth on her level. I decided awhile ago that making others comfortable while I remained extremely uncomfortable was something I was going to stop doing.

I was proud of myself. I believe it's important for our children to see us behave boldly whether dealing with people of our own race or with people outside of it.

How do your children perceive you when you are out and about interacting with the community and authority figures and their teachers, therapists and administrators? I find myself thinking more and more about this.

You Are The Only You That You’ve Got

How can future adults be unafraid to stop the music if they always see us dancing to it instead of interrupting it. As our children grow, they will begin to advocate more and more for themselves. Let's give them good habits to model no matter what color people they are dealing with.

This week’s resource brings light and insight to the experience of being a black parent with a black child that has autism. Our experience is uniquely challenging and I am always interested to hear how other black parents are navigating these waters. Please take a moment to listen. I think you will enjoy her talk

Are you enjoying or surviving winter break? I would for you to leave a comment to tell me about it on our homepage.
